Royal Air Force Typhoon FGR4s have conducted a mission with French aircraft in a joint strike against an hidden munitions depot in Syrian territory operated by the Islamic State group (IS), per a report from the British defence ministry.

The location, identified by reconnaissance, was assessed as containing munitions and bombs, the release indicated, and was situated in mountains just to the north of the ancient city of Palmyra in the heart of Syria.

"The RAF jets used laser-guided Paveway IV weapons to strike a several entry passages leading to the site... early reports suggest the objective was successfully hit," the ministry announced.

There was no sign of any harm to civilians in the strike on Saturday evening and each participating jet made a safe return, the ministry further stated.

The British jets were assisted by a Voyager refuelling tanker.

Daesh - also known as the so-called Islamic State - imposed extremist governance over large swathes of Syria and Iraq until 2019.

"This strike shows the UK's leading role, and determination to stand shoulder to shoulder with allied nations, to eliminate any re-emergence of IS and their violent and radical beliefs in the region," Britain's Defence Chief the minister said.

British military aircraft have conducted overwatch operations over Syria to "deter any efforts to regroup" of IS subsequent to its defeat at the battle of Baghuz in 2019, the MoD reported.

"I extend gratitude to the personnel of the UK armed forces who took part in this strike for their skill and their courage," Healey added. "They were part of thousands of British personnel deployed over the holidays. This operation, to remove militants who pose a risk to our way of life, demonstrates how British military are prepared to act, throughout the year, keeping Britain secure domestically and powerful internationally."

Last December, the US military carried out what it described as a "major assault" on Daesh sites in Syria, subsequent to an attack resulted in the deaths of two American soldiers and a civilian interpreter in the Palmyra area.

The UN reports Daesh still boasts roughly 5-7 thousand combatants in Iraq and Syria.
