Zohran Mamdani Promises a 'New Era' for NYC in Inaugural Speech
During an first day in office, Zohran Mamdani vowed to “reinvent” America's largest city, promising “a new era” and an audacious commencement to his term.
An Unprecedented Figure
The young political star, who was a relatively obscure state assemblyman, has become the city's first mayor of South Asian descent. He additionally marked a milestone by being the first to be sworn in using the Qur'an.

As his term begins, Mamdani and his wife will move from their Astoria apartment to the stately Gracie Mansion. The previous occupant offered a unusual piece of advice about a supposed resident spirit in the home, which reportedly only troubles those who fail to “do right by the city.”
Mamdani ended his address with a simple statement: “The work has only just begun.”
